Peace Corps Ghana commissioned the Institute of Tropical Agriculture, KITA to provide training in Climate Smart Agriculture for 5 rural communities in the Eastern and Volta Regions of Ghana in February 2022.
In the wake of Climate Change affecting small holder farmers productivity in Ghana and Africa, the need to empower small holder farmers in Ghana to adapt and mitigate the effects on climate change on their farming activities is imminent.
The training was facilitated by Mr. Lovans Owusu-Takyi and Prince Charles Nti, both Tutors from the College of Tropical Agriculture. The training was also coordinated by Mr. Abdul Rahaman and Mr. Billion Ohene Addo of Peace Corps Ghana with support from Mr. Aikins.
Communities visited included Gbolu-Kofi and Abenta Communities, in the EAstern Region
Agbenorpedo community, near Akatsi, and two other communities.
Farmers were trained to understand climate change and its causes, effects and adaptation, mitigation and intensification actions required to reduce the impact of climate change on farmers productivity.
Peace Corps also donated tools and equipment as well as seeds to the communities to help them improve their farming activities and productivity.
The communities were very excited and praised Peace Corps and thanked the Teachers from the Kumasi institute of Tropical Agriculture for the knowledge gained and support given them.
